Deployed since November 2010, the MC-130W is operated by the 73rd Special Operations Squadron, assigned to Cannon Air Force Base, NM. They have provided the Dragon Spear combat capability to units supporting Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and NEW DAWN daily with highly effective ISR and armed over watch capability.

The MTSI-Florida office was a major contributor to the program’s success. Harry Strittmatter, Stan Siefke, Gary Libell, and Matt Toppin are members of the USSOCOM Detachment at Eglin AFB, FL. X-47B UCAS-D First Flight

7th February 2011; Edwards AFB, CA

MTSI - X-47B UCAS-D First Flight
MTSI’s role in the X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration (UCAS-D) program culminated in the historic first flight at Edwards AFB on February 4, 2011. This ‘first flight’ mission was an essential step in the Navy/Northrop Grumman UCAS-D team’s effort to design, develop and integrate an autonomous unmanned air system on an aircraft carrier. The 29-minute flight occurred on a hazy Friday afternoon, with MTSI’s own Mike Hufano as the test conductor. The flight provided data that contributed to the verification and validation of the X-47B’s guidance and navigation software, and the aerodynamic control of the tailless design.

MTSI’s Mike Hufano and Josh Barbieri led the X-47B UCAS-D test team through the final preparations leading to the milestone first flight as well as the flight itself. They both had key roles as test conductors for the final, high speed taxi test events at speeds just below 100 knots and then at the highest planned ground speed prior to flight (well over 100 knots). Mike Hufano served MTSI’s customer, Northrop Grumman, as test conductor for the historic first flight. Josh Barbieri has been selected to test conduct the second flight of the program.

Northrop Grumman’s selection of both Mike and Josh for the first and second flight of their program demonstrates their acknowledgement of the knowledge, skill, and professionalism that MTSI employees bring to the program.
