3rd October 2008; Alexandria, VA

Members of MTSI's Applied Visualization Technologies (AVT) Group were recently recognized as Finalists for the 2008 USAF CSTEA, as part of a team headed by Headquarters Air Force Space Command (AFSPC)/A3C. AFSPC/A3C led an effort known as the National Security Space, Space Situational Awareness (SSA) Pilot, aka "NSP", with MTSI providing technology, concept of operations and scenario development, and training support. The NSP Team was selected as the winner among all submissions across HQ AFSPC, with the opportunity to compete as a finalist for the USAF-wide award, held during the week of 10-17 September in Washington D.C. In addition to supporting the CSTEA competition itself, MTSI Supported AFSPC/A3C during the AirForce Association (AFA) Air & Space Technology Exposition, held concurrently.

The NSP Team created and implemented innovative concepts for demonstrating collaborative space operations and shared SSA, along with improved Theater, Joint, and National understanding of the relevance of space events to their operations planning and execution. The NSP effort leveraged an existing tool suite developed by MTSI known as the Battlespace Visualization Initiative (BVI), applied in innovative ways to a collaborative space operations environment.

JBTEC Center open for education in Colorado Springs

19th September 2008; Colorado Springs, CO

Lt. General Henry "Trey" Obering, Missile Defense Agency Director, announced the opening of the Joint Ballistic Missile Defense System Training and Education Center in Colorado Springs CO. "The JBTEC mission is to provide a Warfighter Support Center conducting Ballistic Missile Defense System (BDMS) training and education for national leaders, services, Combatant Commands (COCOMs), the MDA community and selected foreign nationals." The importance of ballistic missile defense education and training has grown substantially within the past five years with more focus on operator training and acknowledging the training needs of our missile defense international partners.

Two members of MTSI's Team based on Colorado Springs CO, Dave "Mick" Micheletti and Dr. George Sheehan, were instrumental in helping to facilitate the government's year-long efforts to secure the facility, provide technical program management, lead working sessions, and oversee the relocation of instructors to their new operating location. Mick took the lead on many aspects of the projects to ensure key stakeholders at the Missile Defense Integrated Operations Center, Schriever AFB CO, as well as the Government Services Administration (GSA) were all engaged, identifying and resolving issues, and keeping upper-level management informed of progress. Mick was recognized for saving MDA over $100K in furniture costs by aggressively securing needed furniture items from another DoD organization that was directed to shut down and relocate operations outside of CO. MTSI also played a key role in creating and submitting the necessary documentation for proper IT certifications & accreditations from the Defense Information Services Agency (DISA) and the local Information Assurance Designated Approval Authority. MTSI is proud to have been part of a significant advancement in pursuit of integrated and consolidated ballistic missile defense training.

JBTEC education and training combines ballistic missile defense system-level education with individual hands-on training in operationally realistic environments to support the joint training needs of the combatant commander. Some of the 130 courses scheduled by the end of the year include the BMDS Staff Course, Command, Control, Battle Management (C2BMC) Situational Awareness, Planner and Sensor Manager courses.

Jon Seward Receives Recognition for his Effort in Developing an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV)

2nd September 2008; Alexandria, VA

Jon Seward, recently a Norwich University graduate, is one of ten engineers who helped put the private military college on the map with the development of an AUV system. What started out as a project in the robotics club, later developed into Norwich's largest engineering project, with financial aid from private companies to a well known organization such as NASA. Seward was the Computer and Electrical Engineering team lead in the AUV development team known as the "Bot Rodders." He was responsible for designing and building the Vision Navigation System on the 3 foot, 30 pound robot known as Poseidon, which was entered into the 11th annual International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition in San Diego this past July.

Along with developing the "eyes" for Poseidon, Jon also played a key role in helping create the Artificial Intelligence on the submersible. Seward stated that, "The A.I. played an important role in successfully mapping out directional controls and designing the internal structure of the robot." "The advancement of AUV technology like this has been rapidly increasing with NASA's new space exploration, as well as private industries looking to use robots in dangerous

underwater environments instead of humans." Jon Seward joined MTSI in June of 2008, and is currently working on radar systems at the Alexandria location. With his background in engineering of advanced technology, Seward is welcomed as an excellent addition to the MTSI staff.
