Modern Technology Solutions Incorporated (MTSI) Announced as Finalist for AUVSI XCELLENCE Awards
Awards ceremony to be held at AUVSI XPONENTIAL 2022 in Orlando, FL
April 12, 2022
Modern Technology Solutions Incorporated (MTSI) has been named as a finalist in the Xcellence in Technology: Software Design and Coding category of the XCELLENCE Awards by the Association for Uncrewed Vehicles Systems International (AUVSI). MTSI was selected from a pool of accomplished applicants as one of several finalists. Winners will be announced during an awards ceremony at AUVSI XPONENTIAL on April 27th at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.
The Supervised Autonomous Function Executive (SAFE®) is a simple and deterministic multi-monitor run time assurance (MM-RTA) software product based on the NASA developed Expandable Variable Autonomous Architecture. SAFE® is intended to enable certification of any highly autonomous or untrusted system utilizing complex software. SAFE® monitors a system’s behavior, flight characteristics, system health, and if the system is projected to violate any of a set of user defined limits, SAFE® takes control of the system and, if required, executes user defined recovery functions. Once the boundary violation has been avoided, SAFE® returns control of the system to the operator or autonomous system.
“SAFE® enables certification authorities with the ability to certify non-deterministic systems (those that can learn from their experiences and apply that knowledge to do things better in the future), which has not been feasible until now.” says Russell Wolfe, MTSI Vice President of Engineering. “The SAFE® framework can be applied to systems in any domain (air, space, ground, & maritime) and inverts the certification paradigm from having to specify everything a system WILL do under all conditions to specifying what a system WON’T do under any conditions. This paradigm shift should greatly simplify and shorten the certification process for highly autonomous systems with complex software to include artificial Intelligence and machine learning.”
“During AUVSI’s 50th anniversary year, we are celebrating the accomplishments of the uncrewed systems industry within the last half-century, reflecting on lessons learned, and looking ahead to our vision for the future,” said Brian Wynne, President and CEO of AUVSI. “The 2022 XCELLENCE award finalists represent some of the leading innovations and organizations that will help us reach our shared vision of assured autonomy.”
XPONENTIAL offers a broad-based and balanced educational program brimming with cutting-edge content and inspirational insights, ranging from policy implications and technical challenges to use cases and best practices across vertical markets and everything in between. The AUVSI XCELLENCE Awards honor innovators in the uncrewed systems industry, including individuals and organizations, with a demonstrated commitment to advancing autonomy, leading and promoting safe adoption of uncrewed systems, and developing programs that use these technologies to save lives and improve society.
