To address the mission impact of a successful cyber attack, modeling and simulation can be utilized in concert with the larger digital engineering effort. A mission level simulation like AFSIM can model system level effects determined from cyber analysis and MBSE work and then apply those effects to systems within the simulation to determine what the overall mission impact is. Simple Monte Carlo techniques can be run to determine not just the expected mission impact but the uncertainty of that measurement assuming that probability distributions are also used for the inputs such as likelihood of attack success.
Mission Engineering is the deliberate planning, analyzing, organizing, and integrating of current and emerging operational and system capabilities to achieve desired warfighting mission effect
MTSI was instrumental in developing the standards established in the Mission Engineering Guide and Mission
Architecture Style Guide that define the value of employing the ME methodology
to answer the key operational problems that face the DoW and IC.
Provides mission characterization for all analysis efforts, a foundational element to understanding the mission space from Blue and Red perspectives. Enables stakeholders to understand the problem set being addressed.
Engineering architects utilize MBSE tools to digitally model the mission, to include system agnostic Mission Threads (MTs) and systems applied Mission Engineering Threads (METs). Models depict relationships, provide traceability to authoritative sources, and standardization by aligning with the Universal Joint Task List, etc.
Applying physics-based modeling to the mission problem set generates data that supports analysis designed to answer key questions – Does the plan work? Does a concept improve outcomes? Analysis is driven by and customized to answer stakeholder queries.
